Online Videos Provide H1N1 Guidance to Parents and Schools
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), has produced two videos to inform parents, teachers, school administrators, school nurses and other educators of steps they can take to prevent the transmission of H1N1 influenza (also known as “swine flu”) and seasonal influenza.

City schools announce changes in testing dates for Governor’s School,
IB program and Community

Richmond Public Schools has updated the testing dates for students who wish to apply to attend Maggie Walker Governor’s School, the district’s International Baccalaureate program at Thomas Jefferson High School or Richmond Community High School for the 2010-2011 school year.

Maurice Henderson sworn in as 5th District School Board Representative
It’s official. Maurice A. Henderson, a NASA exhibits and education outreach coordinator, now represents the 5th District on the Richmond City School Board. Henderson was sworn in Feb. 2 by Federal Judge Roger L. Gregory, United States Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit.

Bellevue Elementary School Seeks Participants For Annual ‘Black Men Read’ Program
Richmond’s Bellevue Elementary School is looking for a few good men, specifically 100 black men from various professions to take part in the school’s annual “Black Men Read” program.

The students, teachers and parents of Richmond Public Schools have responded to the disaster in Haiti with the formation of RPS Cares: A Relief Effort for Haiti. The district-wide fundraising campaign will make monetary donations to several Haiti relief efforts including the American Red Cross and Doctors without Boarders.
If you would like to make a contribution to the district’s fundraising effort, please call one of our participating schools.

period runs from Feb. 2–16

Applications to attend open enrollment schools in Richmond will be available to parents beginning Jan. 11 at any Richmond City school or from the district’s Office of Pupil Personnel Services located on the 13th floor of City Hall.

Henderson Middle School students and staff will deliver care baskets and supplies to homeless
Henderson Middle School’s annual “In the Name of Love” project, a school-wide community service program that provides care baskets and supplies to 50 homeless families. The project is designed to expand Henderson students’ perspectives, develop compassion, promote civic responsibility and educate the entire school community about the impact of homelessness. On Feb. 24, students and staff will deliver baskets, prepare and serve dinner, and present a program of song, dance and theater from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Salvation Army Center located at 2 West Grace Street.

Holton 5K Run set for March 6
Event will celebrate its 10th year
The Linwood Holton Elementary School PTA will hold its 10th Annual Holton 5K Run/Walk March 6 beginning at 9 a.m. The event regularly attracts more than 500 runners and has been recognized by Richmond Magazine as one of the area’s best road races. The 3.2 mile-course winds through the picturesque Ginter Park and Bellevue neighborhoods.

Richmond’s SOL scores rise; more than 90 percent of city schools
earn full accreditation

For the fourth straight year, every Richmond City high school is fully accredited, according to the latest results on the state’s Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. In fact, the number of schools earning full accreditation has climbed above 90 percent as 44 of the district’s 47 schools (93.6 percent) met the SOL benchmark scores in English, mathematics, history and science.

City schools maintain AYP performance levels; Nearly 80 percent of schools meet increased standards in math and reading
Nearly 80 percent of Richmond City Public Schools meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements of the federal government’s No Child Left Behind Act, according to preliminary figures released today. Based on data compiled by school officials, 79 percent (37 of 47) of the city’s schools meet the federal benchmark scores in math and reading.

Richmond’s Open High named Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Dept. of Education
Richmond’s Open High has been named a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The designation is one of the highest honors a school can receive from the federal government. Read more.
