Binford Middle School and Richmond Public Schools:
Illuminating the Path from Competence to Excellence

August 28, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians:

It is with great pleasure that I write to you in anticipation of the 2009-2010 school year.  We are busy preparing for an exciting year for our students, but I want to take this time to tell you about some of our plans and to welcome you to our family.  Please make the commitment to join our PTA and volunteer to help our students and teachers as they strive for success.  Your child will receive his/her schedule on the first day of school during an extended homeroom period.

Binford students and staff will take part in the Effective School-Wide Discipline (ESD) program, designed to instruct students to behave appropriately in each and every area of the school.  As students demonstrate the positive behaviors they have learned, they will earn “Binford Bucks” that will enable them to “purchase” items ranging from school supplies to iPods.  Additional details about the ESD program will be sent home with students and will appear on the Binford web page during the first few weeks of school.

Preliminary assessment data show that Binford students and teachers performed well enough to earn full accreditation for the school and to also make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act.  We look forward to the challenge of the raised AYP objectives for the 2009-2010 school year.

Together we will make the 2009-2010 school year a most memorable one.  Our school year will begin together this September.  Please look at the events listed below and make plans to join us when appropriate:

  •  Wednesday, September 2, 2009: New Student Orientation: 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM (Dinner will be served).
  • Tuesday, September 8, 2009: Students’ First Day of School
  • Thursday, September 24, 2009: Back-to-School Night: 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Students may arrive at school beginning at 7:55 AM and report to the cafeteria if they are eating breakfast or to the auditorium.  If your child is being dropped off at the school, please drop them off in the rear of the building or on the same side of  Floyd Avenue as the school.  This will help to keep students from walking across the oncoming traffic.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (804) 780 - 6231.  I hope that you continue to check our website frequently for the most current information about Binford Middle School: The Pride of the Fan.

Sincerely,

Peter Glessman

Principal
